Bog mats vs ground protection mats. Which fits the project?

In the UK, bog mats usually means heavy hardwood timber mats. Ground protection mats often means composite or HDPE systems. The terms overlap, but the products, connections, handling and evidence can be very different.

Both categories can create temporary access and working areas. The correct choice depends on the actual product and project, not a rule that timber is always heavier duty or composite is always faster.

What the terms usually mean

Timber bog mats are commonly hardwood beam mats. Current UK suppliers list several lengths and thicknesses, normally placed by machine and butted together.

Composite ground protection mats cover a wide range, from two-person lift panels to heavy machine-laid systems. Some connect edge to edge; TM200 overlaps and uses Four3 connectors.

Ask for the exact material, dimensions, weight, connection and supplier guidance before comparing systems.

Timber can be appropriate when

The project specification or competent temporary works design calls for a timber mat arrangement, or a specialist timber supplier is better placed to satisfy the required geometry and loading case.

  • The supplier can provide the required timber and condition evidence

Composite can be appropriate when

An assessed access route, compound or working area benefits from a product-specific connected system, known handling plan, surface detail and reusable hire fleet.

  • Vehicle or plant access is the defined application
  • The exact product class is matched to ground and traffic
  • Panel connection and route continuity are important
  • Delivery, installation, inspection and recovery are planned together
Cranes, outriggers and piling rigs are not a simple timber-versus-composite choice. HSE guidance treats working platforms for cranes and piling rigs as complex or potentially high-risk temporary works. The platform, support, applied pressure and operating plan require competent project-specific assessment.
JOINTS AND WATERLOGGED GROUND

Overlap is useful. It is not a watertight seal.

The original guide correctly highlighted that joint construction differs. A current timber supplier describes full-size hardwood mats as butted together without inter-mat fixings. Isokon describes TM200 as an overlapping, connected system.

The TM200 overlap and Four3 connectors are intended to reduce drift and slippage. Its cellular core provides buoyancy in waterlogged areas, and the foam-filled construction prevents water ingress if the mat is punctured.

Those are product features, not a promise that water or fines cannot move at an installed joint. Ground support, preparation, drainage, traffic, inspection and maintenance still matter. TM200 must not bridge ditches, trenches, voids or unsupported ground.

What is a bog mat?

In the UK, bog mat usually means a heavy timber mat made from hardwood beams bolted together. Suppliers offer different lengths, thicknesses, species and conditions. The term is also used loosely for other access mats, so confirm the exact product before specifying or ordering.

Are bog mats better than composite ground protection mats?

Not in general. Timber and composite are broad categories, and both can form temporary access or working areas. The correct choice depends on the exact product, ground support, applied load and footprint, traffic, layout, handling, duration and any temporary works requirement.

Can TM200 replace timber bog mats?

Sometimes an enquiry described as bog mats is actually an assessed vehicle or plant access route that may fit TM200. TM200 is not an automatic one-for-one replacement. Its supplier figures remain ground dependent, and cranes, outriggers, concentrated loads, unsupported ground and bridging cases need separate review.

Can bog mats or composite mats be used under crane outriggers?

A mat name or headline rating does not approve an outrigger arrangement. Crane configuration, outrigger reactions, spreader design, ground strength, underground features and the full working platform must be assessed by competent people. The specified mat may be timber, composite or part of another engineered solution.

Which is lighter, timber or composite?

It depends on the products compared. One current 5m × 1m × 100mm European hardwood bog mat is listed at approximately 490kg. TrackMatz TM200 is approximately 360kg, while TM50 is 36kg and a two-person lift. Those examples do not make every composite system suitable for the same work.

Which mat is best for peat or waterlogged ground?

There is no automatic answer. Ground strength, water, drainage, support, traffic and duration must be understood first. TM200 has an overlapping connected layout and a buoyant cellular core, but it is not a watertight surface and must not bridge voids or unsupported ground.
